"Try Again" was recorded at Sound on Sound Studios in New York City and was originally written as an inspirational vocal.[4] Information technology was written by Stephen "Static Major" Garrett and Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley, and produced past the latter.[5] According to engineer Jimmy Douglass, it was "written to inspire young people, but Barry [Hankerson] heard it and told them, 'Information technology's got to be well-nigh love'."[4] After all the changes were made to the vocal, the melody and hook remained the same but the lyrics became dearest-themed.[four] On the song Aaliyah "encourages a potential partner not to give up on her".[6]
Music and lyrics [edit]
Musically, "Try Again" is an R&B, dance-pop and electro vocal.[7] [8] Its production "skews more toward the fuzzy electronic sounds of the time to come than the thumping hip-hop beats of the past".[9] Yahoo! Music, formally known as "Launch", mentioned that the song'due south sound is associated with Detroit techno.[10] "Try Once more", also utilizes a mixture of hip-hop and early EDM of the 2000'south.[11] On the vocal, "Aaliyah'south phonation is as nimble as ever, slinkily sliding over the synth line and icing the techno-inspired beat with her R&B finesse".[9] In the song's intro, Timbaland pays homage to Eric B. & Rakim past interpolating the duo's opening poetry from "I Know You Got Soul".[12]
The chorus line "If at outset you don't succeed, then grit yourself off and effort again" is hypnotically repeated in a fashion like to the sampling and vocal manipulation institute in house music.[13] According to Musicnotes, the song is composed in the key of C ♯ minor and is set in time signature of common time with a tempo of 92 beats per minute, while Aaliyah's vocal range spans from Yard ♯ three to K ♯ 4.[5]
